Aviv works at a startup that promotes Israel’s image, and when the attack hit he was in the US about to begin a tour of campuses. “Eventually I was called up and flew back, and I headed to base that same day.”
He says that living the double life of a soldier and a TAU student has been challenging, but that professors are doing everything they can to ensure reservists don’t fall behind. “Coming to the University is like my break—it’s the time when I can academically think about our future and what we can do better.”
He also says an added stressor is paying rent in Tel Aviv, as he is unable to work while on base and cost of living is very high, but that TAU’s efforts to provide aid beyond the academic has made a difference. “It’s a struggle, but it’s our life. We’re doing what we can to not only win the war, but to become better people for the future.”
