The Global AI Production Capacity Index, published by research and advisory firm 5W, has ranked Tel Aviv University 28th worldwide among the 50 universities making the greatest contribution to the development of artificial intelligence.
Tel Aviv University is one of only two Israeli universities included in the global top 30, alongside the Technion, ranked 25th. Stanford University leads the ranking, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Carnegie Mellon University.
Tel Aviv University received an overall score of 62.0, where a score of 100 represents the highest-performing institution in each category.
Measuring AI Production Capacity
Rather than measuring reputation alone, the Global AI Production Capacity Index evaluates universities based on their ability to educate AI talent, generate influential research, and translate innovation into real-world impact.
The ranking is based on six equally weighted categories:
- AI graduates and faculty working at leading AI companies
- AI research publications, conference papers, and patents
- AI degree programs and interdisciplinary education
- Venture capital raised by alumni-founded startups
- Computing infrastructure
- Research citations
Strength Across Research, Talent, and Entrepreneurship
According to the report, Tel Aviv University’s strongest performance came in AI research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and the humanities, venture capital raised by alumni, and the number of graduates working in the AI sector.
These strengths reflect the University’s ability to combine world-class research, interdisciplinary education, entrepreneurship, and strong ties with industry to help shape the next generation of artificial intelligence.
The Challenge of Computing Infrastructure
The report also identifies computing infrastructure as the University’s greatest structural challenge.
According to the report, limited computing infrastructure is the primary factor preventing both Tel Aviv University and the Technion from ranking even higher internationally, despite their strong performance across the other evaluation categories
